Vertex Education is a management organization that provides
business services to schools. Areas of support include academics,
special education, finance, IT, facilities, food services, HR,
communications and marketing, compliance and construction. The goal
of Vertex Education is to be a resource and service to schools that
are not able to offer these services in-house. Vertex currently
manages 19 schools comprising 23,000 students and over 2,000
As a key member of the Vertex Education Executive team, the
Director of Business Development will assume a critical role in
driving the overall growth and management of the business by owning
the long-term strategy for the company including strategic growth
through new schools, strategic partnerships, business
opportunities, and merger and acquisitions.
This position is responsible for designing the framework to
evaluate future opportunities and create the playbook for strategic
initiatives and projects that drive the long-term growth of the
company. This role will lead the strategic planning process,
playing a critical role in the formulation and execution of
strategic initiatives and portfolio expansion opportunities
designed to advance our business to the next level. The role will
drive partnerships with national, state, and local leaders and
community partners seeking to expand or start new charter schools
and liaise with various state agencies. Additionally, this role
will lead conversations with school districts to accelerate the
creation of charter district/partnerships and increase access to
high-quality charters that are responsive to parent demand in new
communities. The Director of Business Development will be heavily
involved in all major investment and partnership strategies,
working with Finance and relevant cross-functional business leaders
to ensure investments and partnerships are accretive, and generate
or exceed expected returns.
In addition to the essential job functions above, key
responsibilities include the following:
Growth: Execute against the current Legacy Traditional Schools
charter school and plan, develop, maintain, and create new
strategies to ensure its continued growth and success. Build and
maintain strategic relationships with CMOs, small network and
single-site leadership for potential growth opportunities. Recruit
and source new school model providers and school leaders for school
creation and school turnaround.
Partnership: Build and maintain strong relationship with charter
school boards in multistate jurisdiction to assess new growth
opportunities. Determine and coordinate outreach and parent
engagement as necessary, and in partnership with charter advocates,
to support policies and practices that benefit the health and
growth of charters.
Leadership: Identify stakeholders and build communication plans,
achieve buy-in and set expectations about the integration
processes. Demonstrate ability to lead, influence and impact the
organization, advise and structure key strategic priorities and
Risk Management: Identify risk and assumptions, evaluate impact
and develop mitigation strategies and contingent plans.
Integration Planning and Execution: Drives all planning and
project management to achieve strategic acquisition objectives.
Cultural Integration: Perform cultural diagnostics, merger risk
assessment, operating style analysis and culture.
Portfolio Analysis and Process Improvement: Partners with
leaders to enable and execute against business strategies including
Data and Analytics: Develops, maintains and distributes strategy
related reports and financial models as well as provide in depth
strategic analysis. Analyzes data to determine present and future
performance in relation to internal targets, competitor results and
Education, Certifications & Experience
Bachelor’s Degree in business or related field- required
Master of Business Administration (MBA) or related field- highly
Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience including business
development, charter expansion, M&A, a successful track record
of developing and implementing business strategy, financial
modeling and analysis, competitive analysis, business planning and
Financially savvy business leader with sound decision making,
strategic acumen, process improvement and analytical
Strong executive presence and previous experience relating to
key customers and articulating company direction, plans and
approach, both in one-on-one environments and presenting to larger
Thought leader with the ability to think strategically and
communicate effectively with all levels of management and the
capability to guide, educate, & influence the thinking of senior
Ability to distill complex information into simple and
meaningful insights & conclusions (and bring everyone along to
drive alignment & action)
Previous experience with startup type of organizations
supporting multi-geographic areas
The incumbent in this position will be required to pass a
criminal history background check
Must be able to obtain and hold a valid IVP Level One
Fingerprint Clearance Card at all times
Travel between campuses is required from time to time.
This position requires the need to lift objects (up to 25
pounds) on occasion.
This position may require sitting for long periods at times,
talking on the phone, standing, kneeling, stooping and long periods
